The Making of a Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil
Our ULTRA EPA/DHA meets new standards that have been instituted for quality assurance. The ULTRA EPA/DHA is compliant with the newly ratified guidelines that were developed under the auspices of the Council for Responsible Nutrition. This global agreement establishes consistent measurement standards for fish oil quality and can provide a reliable guide to purchasing fish oil supplements. It sets forth rigorous and validated methodology for assaying the amount of omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids, as well as quality standards and limits on environmental contaminants.
MEDIFOOD® ULTRA EPA/DHA meets all 3 indicators of superiority:
1. Stability Testing
Fish oil supplements are susceptible to oxidation. Enhanced stability standards include tighter specifications for the major indicators of oxidation. Stability can now be measured by testing the two primary products of oxidation (peroxide value), secondary oxidation products (anisidine value) and total oxidation.
There are limits for peroxide value (PV) of 5 meq/kg and anisidine value (AN) of 20 meq/kg. The total amount of PV and AN is written as TOTOX (total oxidation). TOTOX is a measure of total oxidation calculated as a combined limit of peroxide and anisidine value. The TOTOX value raises quality standards as there is a maximum amount that is now allowed. Furthermore, due to superior fish oil stability and the inclusion of 25 IU of natural vitamin E per capsule, MEDIFOOD® can assign a shelf life of 3 years for the fish oil capsules in their original unopened containers (high-density polyethylene, HDPE bottles), and at a temperature between 60oF and 80oF. Our stability protocol is based on studies of the product at various temperatures and relative humidity’s. Different quality parameters are tested at different time points for each of these conditions. This includes peroxide value, acid value, p-anisidine value, capsule disintegration, fill weights and organoleptic evaluation. The fish oil capsules are also tested at each time point to ensure that the levels of EPA and DHA remain stable for the entire shelf life of the product.
It is quite common to find unacceptable levels of peroxides in popular fish oil products. This can be apparent if you bite into the capsule and it produces a rancid, fishy taste rather than a cleaner fish oil taste. This can be indicative of primary and secondary oxidation.
2. Quantity of EPA and DHA.
MEDIFOOD® ULTRA EPA/DHA is guaranteed to contain at least 100% of the stated amount of the EPA and DHA for the lifetime of the product. There is now a uniform standard for measuring EPA and DHA content that can substantiate label claim. This is stated as mg/g of free fatty acids.
3. Purity
