Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that provides many protective functions within the body. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant, meaning it has the ability to scavenge free radicals in lipid environments. Due to these properties, vitamin E is essential to maintaining the phospholipid bilayer of cell membranes. Vitamin E has the ability to intercept lipid peroxidation chain reactions within cell membranes by acting as a reducing agent. The ability of vitamin E to protect cell membranes has been found to be very beneficial in managing conditions such as anemia via preservation of red blood cells. Vitamin E also has the ability to interact with and support other antioxidants, such as vitamin C.
Vitamin E may support health of the vascular tree and heart function.
